As players run onto the field, the student section erupts in cheers. Blue and gold colors of Clemen’s glisten in Lehnhoff Stadium lights. Shining. The team they’re playing is their longtime rival, Steele.
After years of growth, the rivalry against Steele has become one of the most important parts of Clemen’s history. The first ‘Battle of 3009’ game was played in 2014, and this year’s game took place on Nov. 4.
David Voos is the varsity coach for Samuel Clemens. He graduated from Clemens in 1983 and has been teaching for 34 years.
”I think it’s just that we’re so close to each other. We all live in the same community and go to the same stores. A lot of people look forward to this battle,” Voos said.
One of the main reasons why the rivalry even started is due to the location of the schools. The FM3009 acted as a border between the two schools. People who lived on one side went to Steele, and the other, Clemens.
The students from each school regularly look forward to these games.
“I think that it really adds excitement and thrill to the school to make it more fun,” Jonathan Maddox said.
Clemens students love the football games between them and Steele. This year, the tickets for the game sold out. The sales from the tickets will go back to the schools to improve them overall. Each ticket costed 6 dollars for an adult and 3 dollars for a student.
‘The Battle of 3009’ is one of the most popular football games in the Schertz area, and that’s because of the talented players who play in it.
Cameron Owens, a varsity cornerback for the Clemens team, is one of the players who played in the game.
“It’s like no other game because the whole city is here and the whole district is here,” Cameron said. “Only one side is going to come out with a W.”

The Cruel Truth of Teacher’s Pay
Teachers are Being Underpaid, Ignored

Teacher salary has always been questionable. Sometime’s teachers can have a really big payoff. But most of the time, it can be the most miserable job.
“Right now, I think personally the pay would be adequate if the work was less. For example, if I had one less class. So I have like two conference periods it would be far more manageable,” English teacher Mr. Suplee said.
Weekly pay has gone down 17.0% than those of compatible workers- compared with the 1.8% low income in 1994. Schools need to encourage higher pay in order for the youth to enjoy a high-quality teacher.
“Well, considering that I’m in the early stages of my teaching here, and the job before that only paid me 400 bucks a week, which is not that much. I don’t mind the pay as much," English teacher Brianna Ortiz said.
Most teachers come from low end jobs that did not pay much, considering what Ortiz has said, teachers expect a better paying job.
