San Antonio Dance Umbrella Deserves Your Support
Organized with the purpose of spreading dance education in the surrounding area, the San Antonio Dance Umbrella (SADU) has since become responsible for the growth of a wide dance community and numerous educational opportunities. This local organization with such an influential role in our community deserves our support and attention.
SADU is a nonprofit organization that was created in 1992 when the Department of Cultural Affairs asked a group of dancers to unite the growing dance community in the city and its suburbs. Since its founding, SADU has provided students and adults alike with connections to all kinds of workshops, summer intensives, college programs, professional artists, and business experience.
Through SADU, dancers and artists can study and work with professionals in their field. Managing Director Amy Ragan McDowell is a trained ballet and contemporary dancer, and many members of the governing Board of Directors also have professional dance experience. The opportunity to work with experts such as these allows for a more effective and beneficial learning experience than might be found elsewhere.
One of the many job exposure opportunities available at SADU is its internship program. Young adults can apply for internships in fields such as graphic design, community events, photography, videography, public relations, and marketing. These internships provide participants with experience in their field and also help interns become acquainted with businesses and potential employers in the area.
SADU also serves to connect local artists by sending out information about performances and classes to local dance institutions. This frequent communication strengthens the sense of community in San Antonio and encourages creativity through the spread of ideas. This in turn causes growth in the community as a whole as more are affected by this positive influence.
As with all nonprofits, SADU requires donations and volunteers to keep up the great work it has been accomplishing. Volunteers can help at sponsored events, dance schools, or even on the management level. Students can get service hours and experience, while SADU is provided able bodies to keep the organization going strong on all fronts. Likewise, donations help keep all the programs running and available to the public.
With all the benefits the San Antonio Dance Umbrella provides the community, there is no reason we should not throw it our support. Its local impact is undeniable, and community members should look into donating, volunteering, and getting involved with this influential organization so that it can continue to positively serve San Antonio.
